Part Two
Chapter 1
The smell of butter filled the air, a comforting scent that was pure heaven. The sound was comforting, too, sizzling in the frying pan as it melted. Rebecca Munham carried the chopping board she had, slipping the ingredients she’d just chopped: onion first, then garlic, right before she added the rice in with the butter. The smell was divine and got even better when she added the meat, and her mouth watered at the thought of having something so savory for breakfast. She’d been on a coffee kick lately, having had too much work and not enough time.
Of course, rice wasn’t the only thing she cooked. Rebecca removed that pan from the stove and replaced it with an empty one, where she began to repeat the process with an omelet. Her body began to relax as she let instincts take over, which was what always happened whenever she cooked: her mind drifting off, all her problems fading away as she lost herself in this moment. This wasn’t the most standard of breakfasts, but there was one thing she learned about living in a home where so many other creatures resided: that while they liked order, some variety on occasion excited them thoroughly.
She wished she had time to make dessert, but that usually needed a few more hours. Despite the relaxation of her tasks, she was still doing the work fast, as the actual cook would be here any minute now—
“Rebecca! Why are you up so early?”
Rebecca turned off the stove, having just finished the stir-fried chicken. Triumph slid inside her, one she tried to cover as she turned to the cook and gave her a bright smile. Martha was a middle-aged woman on the plump side, with a stern face and a kind personality, and it always put Rebecca at ease.
“Good morning, Martha. I was restless earlier and thought I’d put my energy to good use.”
The cook eyed the food laid out on the kitchen counter, clucking noises coming out of her mouth. But there was no missing the way her eyes lit up when she spotted the rice.
“Pretty heavy for breakfast,” Martha commented.
Rebecca eyed her innocently. “Perhaps you can make some stuff to balance it out? Light breakfast, too?”
That pleased Martha thoroughly, who always liked to be the boss and call the shots. More pots were placed on the stove, and Rebecca watched as the woman began her own routine of cooking, decidedly faster than Rebecca was. The kitchen staff came in to distribute the food and deliver it to the dining hall, Rebecca proceeded to wash the plates—another routine that eased her and relaxed her. Martha protested that she could have that done later, but Rebecca was adamant, finishing everything up easily. When she was done, she reluctantly headed out of the kitchen, knowing Martha already had enough staff for the lunch menu today.
Rebecca walked the hallways, which were rather quiet at this hour of the day. Some were already up, but the majority of the
